Mistakes that Every First Time Traveller Makes

If you are travelling for the very first time, then you will understand what an incredible experience it can be. After all, you get to see the world in a whole new light and you can also really take in the sights that are all around you as well. If you are finding it hard to push yourself and get out there for the very first time, then there are a few things that you can do to make your first travelling experience absolutely incredible.

Overbooking

It may be tempting to overbook so that you can get everything locked in. You may be tempted to go and get dinner, lunch and breakfast booked, and this way, when you arrive, you don’t have to worry about a thing. You will however soon come to the realisation that it pays to have some level of flexibility. Book the big things and also change up your itinerary so that you can take advantage of any new opportunities that come your way. This will help you to make the most out of the time you have when you are there, and it also gives you the chance to make some impulse decisions as well. Of course, if you are having a hard time not booking the food options then try and take it easy by just booking breakfast or even by just booking dinner. When you do this, you can easily make the most out of the time you have in that location and you can also really benefit from the local services around you.

Using a Travel Agent for Everything

The internet is a fantastic place. You can book anything you want now online, and this gives you complete control over your entire booking. That doesn’t mean that you have to use them for absolutely everything. You can book your flights, your accommodation and even your food separately and when you do this, you can easily take care of everything yourself, This is a fantastic way for you to reap the benefits of customising your own holiday experience and you would be surprised at how easy it is for you to save money this way as well.

Being Scared

You really can spot first-timers because they guard their money belts, are suspicious and are always trying to figure out who is going to rip them off. You have to remember that the majority of locals are not out to get you and that you do have to trust them. When you do this, you will go on to make way more friends. This is a fantastic way for you to really get to know other people in the local area.

Underestimating Costs

Everything is going to cost you more than you think it will. From the flights that you booked to the beers that you buy in a bar and even the taxi fare that it will cost you to get home as well. You will probably spend way more than you planned and for this reason, you need to budget for this. You also need to save up as much money as you can before you travel. If you want to save money then you might want to look into a HDB rental as well, as this can really help you to budget more and it can help your money to go way further as well, so do keep that in mind.

Packing Far Too Much

You should never really take a sleeping bag unless you are going camping. They really are completely useless, and a lot of hostels won’t let you use them at all. You should really avoid taking a massive first aid kit as well. You only need a few necessities, because if you ever need anything then you can easily get it when you are out and about. You may think that you need more than two pairs of jeans as well, but this is not the case at all. In fact, you can easily use a dry-cleaning service and you can also ask the hotel you are staying at to do your laundry as well. This is a fantastic way for you save space and it is also a great way for you to really bring more items back with you as well, which is always great when you are out trying to get souvenirs for your trip. Of course, that leads onto the next point.

Buying Far Too Much

It can be tempting to walk into any travel shop and go absolutely nuts. You could probably spend thousands in there and you could also pick up gimmicky shirts as well. You could also pick up money belts, hiking shoes and so much more. The truth is that you don’t actually need any of this. You should always wear clothes that you feel incredible in.

Panicking

Things can go wrong and this is not because you are new to travelling. Things go wrong because you travel, and this happens to everyone. One mistake that a lot of people make is that they let it get to them. Sure, your train didn’t turn up and maybe your hotel lost your booking as well. At the end of the day, you have to know that all of this will get sorted out. If you get upset about something then this will only make it worse so you really do need to make sure that you put the work in to try and control yourself and to gather your emotions. When you have taken the time to do this, you will feel way better afterwards, and you may even feel as though you can make better decisions.

Not Taking Out Insurance

At the end of the day, you really do need insurance. Even if you are planning on lying around a resort for a week, you need it. If you get sick or if your bags go missing, then you need to know that you are going to be covered for it. Of course, when you are actually travelling, you would be happy that you spent the money on a policy as well, so it is important that you take this into account. If you do want to save money on your policy then don’t take out the biggest cover possible. Instead, cover yourself for the things that would devastate you if they happened. This can include taking out health insurance, cover for any expensive devices that you have or even cancellation insurance. The little things can be replaced, but it is the bigger things that you have to worry about.

Guidebooks

Guidebooks are great, and they are very useful if you want to point yourself in the direction of something. They are also ideal if you want to find out more information on the places that you are visiting. One mistake that a lot of people make is only doing the things that are listed in the guidebook. It is important that you branch out from time to time, or even visit restaurants that are off the beaten path. Sure, guidebooks can be great but at the end of the day, if you rely on them as the only option then you will really struggle to find things to do and you may also be losing out on a ton of opportunities as well. If you get to know some of the locals then they can really help you to find out some of the hidden gems in the area too.
